1) Paddle with a buddy.
2) Let someone know where your going and when you should be back(ie Trip plan)
3) Dress for the conditions and have a plan.
4) Never underestimate the river, or overestimate your skills.
Putting so much work into this it is insane. Rules, waivers, registration forms, emergency plans, permissions for legal camping, portage signs, canoe/kayak rental, getting volunteer, designing logos, and still so much to do. Registration is opened up now but only 1 team has their paper work turned in, this is probably the biggest thing I have organized and it is simply stomach wrenching as I go along. I will be so happy once it is over, but sad at the same time.
To visit! and in Michigan!!!

This weekend was Campus to Coast 2012, 160miles 3days from the Rock at MSU to Lake Michigan via the Red Cedar and Grand River. We set out at 7am on Friday 3/30 to be met by long hours paddling, difficult portages(carrying the boats over land for a bit in avoidance of dams), falling in the water(one of us went over a dam by accident!), hunger pains, cold wet fingers, back pains, and risking getting shot or arrested via illegal camping. I fell in once getting into my kayak in the morning, I shot the rapids at Grand Rapids at 11pm at night lit only by my head lamp while being watched by crowds on the bridges over head, and my back and arms are the sorest they have ever been. However, as crazy as this whole trip sounds and as miserable as it was it was one of the greatest things I have ever done. The feeling of seeing the coast after 3 days of paddling and ill weather is indescribable, my partner was almost in tears. On 4/1 at approximately 2:50PM me and my partner Elyse were the first group to reach the coast in a trip over 55hrs 50min. Shortly after the next group arrived at around 4:20PM and our bicyclist friend who left that day at 7AM arrived a little later at 4:50PM. It was an amazing trip, most of us took a nice swim in lake Michigan (the water was freezing but it was so refreshing it didn’t matter).
Next year we plan on doing things bigger and better, incorporating some sponsors along with making it a contest like POCAR. The trip is very do able and we proved it, and in everyone who made its opinion a whole of a lot more rewarding then finishing POCAR. I can’t wait till next year, even though I will likely be overseeing the event and not participating, I can’t wait for everyone else to have that amazing feeling.
And that is what I did this weekend.
Meanwhile, In Alpena, Michigan of the Day: Channel 11 News Director Tom Murphy can brighten up even the worst weather report with his signature sunny disposition.
I want to go up north just to watch this guy lol
I am so confused about this winter. I am bringing my mountain bike next Friday, just in case there is no snow.
